Each list comprises 501(c)(3) organizations that: (1) have been listed as tax exempt in IRS records during the past 24 months and (2) contain organizations that have identified themselves as one or more of the following (a) private grant making, (b) corporate foundations, (c) community foundations, and/or (d) philanthropy volunteerism & grant-making organizations with the IRS.

List data are drawn from more than 1 million current IRS records, in addition to information gathered from the National Center for Charitable Statistics, and by the nonprofits themselves. The lists are delivered as Excel files.

What makes our list unique?

The organizations listed have identified themselves with the IRS as non-operating private foundations, and they have filed taxes within last two tax-filing years (2015 and 2016).

Private Foundation: A private foundation is an independent legal entity set up solely for charitable purposes.
Non-operating private foundations – These foundations typically make grants to public charities, and they make up the vast majority of the entire private foundation community.

A note regarding grants:  Many grant-giving foundations and government agencies offer grants ranging from a few hundred dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Many applications can be completed online, on the funder’s website.
